I love filming conventions, I love magic! lets face it, who doesn't? A couple of weeks ago I had the honour of not only attending but filming at Jonti's Deception Magic Convention.
The day time was a little tricky to film. I obviously was running about, greeting friends and inspecting magic which takes up more time than you would realise but also, the magic community is a very secretive thing. A magician makes a living doing something that no one else can explain. Conventions are filled with methods being sold and shared between professionals and hobbyists wanting to improve their magic portfolio so you have to be careful with what you film.
Due to this fact restricting what I could film, I tried my best to simply capture the atmosphere between everyone during the day when the lectures weren't being filmed. Everyone is so wonderful and close. A lot of people who attend are close to Jonti as this is only his second year but all very passionate about the subject. Everyone is accepting of everyone regardless and skill level and is genuinely there to help anyone who needs help with techniques and general tips.
There were also quite big names there, Alan Rorrison, who helps come up with and design the magic for Dynamo and Troy. Dee Christopher and Jasz Vegas from BBC Killer Magic were also there selling their own effects or just socialising with the people there.
Either way, I hope you enjoyed what I was able to film :)
One of my favourite things in the world about magic is how social magicians can be when put into a room together. After the day event is over, there is an evening event put on for the people who bought the small selection of tickets available. It is by far my favourite part of the evening.Very little magic is actually done here, its more of comedy acts themed around magic. Lets face it, most magicians aren't going to be bothered by another magician finding their card. I am also sorry I didn't film more of the evening show, I was under the impression that my camera would not pick it up due to the lighting and sound pollution but I was annoyingly wrong. Next time I wont make that mistake!
The night seems to be in two parts, the official after party - which is situated on the top floor of the crown pub, and then the after, after party, which was in the Adelphi lounge.
I just want to point out that the evening event may show intoxicated people in it, but these are all grown adults who knew how much they were drinking and when to stop. You should always drink responsibly.
In conclusion, the deception convention was an incredible success once again and I would like to use this space to thank Jonti for hosting an excellent day and night. I can safely say I will attending the third one next year!
