There are too many people trying to hold each other back in this world. I want to use my own website to help spread the love and share with you my most awesomely talented friends!
Lee Wells is not only an award winning magician, he's also a devoted boyfriend to his partner, a loving father and also one of the nicest men I know.
How long have you been into magic?
What got you into it?
Unfortunately, this isnt a happy story to begin with. It was during my time in the armed forces (Royal Navy Submarine Service) that I really needed a hobby when I was away from home so I decided to do a couple of card tricks just to keep myself entertained and never thought to take it further as a career. It's was a couple months after starting that unfortunately due to some circumstances around my job in the armed forces I became diagnosed with reactive depression and had quite severe anxiety. I then turned to my magic to make me feel better by constantly practicing every chance I got and in all honesty it made me feel so much better keeping my mind of any negative feelings and thoughts so it helped me through so many dark times, controversially I would say it helped more than the medication I was on at the time.
Do you remember what your first paid gig was?
Only after 3-4 months of practicing I met a fellow magician called Terry Rooney in a bar in Glasgow and he offered me a chance to work alongside him at his residency called the Blue Dog on Thursday nights. It was at this point that things changed so much for me and I became confident when performing to spectators. Once I left the Armed forces I got myself my first local residency after a week and got to meet a lot of great people in the city that helped me get a lot of work and the rest as they say is history.
Is it hard being an entertainer, working nights when you have a family?
Yes it can but if you have support from your family and loved ones then it takes a lot of the pressure off. Yes of course I would love to be at home more but I get to be with my loved ones every day and when working away I try to make sure they can be with me so isn't a major concern.
Who are your inspirations in magic?
The guy who got me my first residency Terry Rooney as I owe so much of my career to him. Also David Stone, Marc Spelmann, Nicolas Lawrence, Will Tsai. With out sounding a kiss arse , I feel I need to mention my good friends Lewis Le Val and Ben Francis as they have similar drive, ambition and passion and have helped me along the way and a complete pleasure to work with.
Also, this may sound corny but my girlfriend who is my biggest fan and critic so she makes sure (from a spectators put of view) that I only perform tricks that people would like to see and not magic to fool other magicians.
What was the proudest moment in your magic career?
Being voted best new entertainer in Liverpool 2014 and Best Entertainer in Liverpool 2015 as I was up against some amazing talent and will forever be thankful to everyone for ever being concidered for the award never mind winning it and I thank everyone who voted for me.
Do you remember the most difficult person you performed to? What happened?
I would have to say it was when I performed for legendary boxer Smoking Jo Frazier. It wasn't so much a difficult performance but I was so nervous as I hadn't been doing magic all the long and was the first real celebrity I had met. Turned out to be amazing and he even had his staff frame our picture together and I got a signed glove.
If i wanted to watch you perform is there anywhere I could go?
I currently hold a few regular slots around Liverpool :-
You can catch me at Viva Brazil every Friday and Sunday
Modo fortnightly and special events and Kingdom monthly and special events.
Is there anything you would like to add?
Never, ever be put off from doing what you want to do and never think you cant achieve your goals as an entertainer because others complain that you are not experienced enough as I have learned that those that have the time to mock you are the ones that struggle to find a gig or expect a gig to find them, and on that note............. Always be proactive when looking for work in your area of expertise........... go out and show these people what you can do.
